The target uses a series of precisely positioned reference points located at known distances above the imaging plane. Unlike conventional focus targets that rely on rulers, angled scales, or external measuring tools, this design encodes depth directly into the object itself. Each numbered marker is positioned at a calibrated 1 cm interval along the depth axis while remaining visually centered when viewed from above.
The geometry was calculated using the hypotenuse of each folded section, allowing the target to maintain accurate vertical offsets while presenting a compact and symmetrical footprint on the copy stand. When photographed from directly overhead, operators can immediately determine both the point of critical focus and the effective depth of field captured by the imaging system.
Applications
- Copy stand calibration
- Cultural heritage digitization workflows
- Archival photography
- Collection imaging quality control
- Lens and aperture evaluation
- Focus consistency testing across operators and equipment
Benefits
- Accurate 1 cm depth intervals
- Compact footprint for use on crowded copy stands
- Safe around fragile cultural heritage materials
- Printable and easily reproduced
- Stores flat when not in use
- No rulers, fixtures, or external measurement devices required
- Immediate visual confirmation of focus plane and depth of field
Design Considerations
The target is designed to be printed on heavyweight cardstock. Cardstock provides sufficient rigidity to maintain consistent geometric relationships while remaining flexible enough to safely contact collection materials if accidental contact occurs. Unlike metal gauges, acrylic fixtures, or rigid calibration tools, the paper construction minimizes the risk of damage to fragile archival objects.
The folding structure allows the target to be stored flat, reproduced inexpensively, and distributed as a printable template. Because the measurement system is embedded directly into the folds, assembly requires no specialized hardware or calibration equipment.
The target enables rapid assessment of how much depth is rendered acceptably sharp within a capture. By examining the visibility and clarity of each numbered reference point, photographers can compare aperture settings, camera heights, lens choices, and workflow configurations without introducing additional measurement equipment into the imaging area.
Developed for production imaging environments where repeatability, safety, and efficiency are as important as image quality itself.
